Spring Term Begins February 3, 2007
Spring term classes run from February 3 through June 9, 2007. Come enjoy classes at our wonderful location on the third floor of the DC Dance Collective. We offer classes for juniors (ages 6 to 15) and adults at all levels of instruction. See the schedule at the bottom of this page.

All instruction is individualized, and every student learns at his or her own pace. You may begin at any time during the term. The first class is always free.

Our Philosophy
Karate ni sente nashi. There is no first attack in karate. This phrase, inscribed on a monument in a Zen monastery in Kamakura City, embodies the essence of Okinawan Karate. Karate is a martial art, developed by the Okinawans as a method of self defense.

Karate is therapeutic.  Practicing the katas (pre-arranged sequences of movements which include blocks, attacks, and specific stances) helps develop timing, balance, and focus.  Instincts are sharpened and willpower is strengthened.  The study of Karate develops a sense of inner confidence and peace.

The traditional "pine forest" (Matsubayashi) system of Shorin-ryu Karate stresses working with a partner as opposed to competing against an opponent.  What is important is the development of better human beings, not just fighters.

Our Faculty
Betsy Toth, Sensei, Third Dan, is Chief Instructor at Drago Chi Budo Kai. She has been teaching Shorin-ryu Karate in DC, Maryland, and Virginia since 1987. She currently holds classes at DC Dance Collective in Washington, DC, Ki Theater in Washington, VA, and in Warrenton, VA.
